Donald Trump used crafty campaign messaging to undermine his opponents and rally supporters—even though he lacked specific policy ideas for his presidency.

It seems logical that candidates would focus on the good stuff and highlight their positive attributes. Unfortunately, candidates (and the public) can get swept up in the rosy-colored messaging a candidate repeats without realizing some things are being left out. In the 2016 presidential race, Republican candidate Donald Trump repeatedly criticized and promised to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a health care bill passed under Democratic president Barack Obama. The bill was unpopular with some Americans. Trump targeted those people, rallying them around criticism of the legislation. However, he neglected to propose a solid alternative policy to the ACA. Trump mastered political messaging by highlighting what his supporters thought was something positive (promises to repeal the ACA) while successfully ignoring and drawing attention away from what his promises lacked (an alternative to the ACA). Trump was elected, but his failure to develop an alternative to the ACA plagued his presidency. He’d successfully told voters the story he wanted them to hear, but it wasn’t the whole story.
